The door slammed in Giles’s face, Buffy words still echoing in his head, "Go help those girls that still need teaching." He fumbled with his glasses, wiping them before wiping away the tear forming in his eye. In a time of war such as this there was no time for emotions to interfere.

Forcing a smile as Dawn passed Giles ducked into an empty bedroom and shut the door behind him. Here alone he could allow himself to cry, his worst fears finally realised. After all his years of training and support, Buffy no longer had a use for him.

I thought it was a terrific piece. I always thought that what Giles did that night was the hardest thing he could have done. I alwys felt sorry for him at that moment.
